Which charger is right for you?
Most Glasgow homes choose a 7kW smart charger — fast enough for a full overnight charge and compatible with cheap EV tariffs (Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, EDF GoElectric).
- Tethered chargers. Built-in cable. Plug straight in — quickest day-to-day.
- Untethered (socket) chargers. Use your own cable. Tidier look, easier upgrades.
- Solar-compatible smart chargers. Charge from your panels for near-zero cost.
- Load-balanced chargers. Protects your fuse — essential for older Glasgow tenements.

FAQs
Home charger questions, answered
- Tethered or untethered — which should I choose?
- Tethered is faster day to day because the cable's already there. Untethered keeps the wall tidier and lets you upgrade cable types later. If two cars in the household use different sockets, untethered is usually the better long-term call.
- Does my consumer unit need upgrading before installation?
- Often no. A modern 18th-edition board with spare capacity is fine. Older Glasgow boards (Wylex rewireable, MEM, anything pre-2008) sometimes need a small consumer unit upgrade or a separate EV-only enclosure — we confirm on the survey.
- Can I use solar panels to charge my car?
- Yes. Solar-aware chargers (Zappi, Hypervolt, Ohme ePod with eco mode) follow your export and divert spare PV into the car. Worthwhile if you have 4kW+ of panels and charge during daylight hours.
- How long will my charger last?
- Reputable units (Andersen, Hypervolt, Wallbox, Ohme, Zappi) carry 3–5 year warranties and typically last 10+ years with no maintenance. Firmware updates land over Wi-Fi automatically.
- What happens if I move house?
- Two options: leave it as a selling point (recent EPC and EV-ready listings sell faster), or we can de-install and refit at your new address for a small labour-only charge.
